Wild River Wave

Waves are always fun to photograph. Water is mesmerizing. This is a wave from the Soca River (pronounced so-cha) in Slovenia. I took many photos of the river to show the beautiful canyons and rocks, surrounded by trees and mountains. This is a close up of one small area in the river where there were some rocks, making the water crash into and over the rocks in a wave.

Every photo I took of the wave is different! This one was taken with a slow shutter speed of 1/8 second. The faster the water the faster (yet still slow) shutter speed one must use so it is not too sharp nor so blurred that you lose all detail. For ocean tides I have often used 13 seconds, a drastically longer exposure,  since the water flows slowly.

If you want to really capture each drop flying in the wave’s spray then 1/2000 or faster is needed for sharp clear drops. I have used as high as 1/8000 (the fastest shutter speed my camera can do) at times.

The water in many of the rivers in Slovenia is clear and a beautiful light green/lime color. It is apparently because of the limestone in the riverbeds.

Cheers,
